Why Japanese?

Why am I studying Japanese?
I have always been interested in the Japanese language, and when my older brother decided to go on the Japan PGA (professional golf) tour, my interest in the language skyrocketed. I saw him living in Japan and enjoying his life there, learning Japanese and fitting into the culture, so I thought that learning myself will be a great experience and another communication tool with my brother. In addition, I hope to release my music from Korea to Japan one day, and I thought that knowing how to speak Japanese will be an advantage during the process.

After the first four weeks of Japanese class, I found many similarities of the language to my first language, Korean. This helped me memorize some vocabulary words faster and easier; however, Japanese is my fourth language, and the most challenging part was getting mixed up with other languages and their grammar forms. Last semester, I continued learning Spanish, which I started about 9 years ago, and the grammar has very much stuck in me when I learn new languages, which made it difficult not to transfer that thought when learning new grammar in Japanese.

Overall, I am very excited to learn not only about the Japanese language but also about the culture of the country, along with the daily expressions I could use when I travel to Japan!

  1. Dahee-san, I really enjoyed reading this! That is so cool that you make music (I would love to hear some)! That is very interesting that you found similarities in Japanese and Korean; I have been interested myself in learning other Asian languages and that is good to know (but I would imagine knowing four languages would get confusing at times--that's so cool that you know that many!). I hope when you travel to Japan it is super fun (I'm sure it will be :) )

  2. Hello ダヒさん! Like Amelia, I enjoyed reading your post too! Yes, being able to connect with a family member is often an excellent reason for us to learn something new. I am sure that knowing four languages is exciting that challenging. With the addition of Japanese, you have a balance of Eastern and Western languages. You are certainly an ambitious young lady. I look forward to hearing your music one day!
